It’s all about women in the Billboard Hot 100‘s top five again, as Meghan Trainor‘s “All About That Bass” heads up an all-female top five for a second straight week. Trainor’s debut hit leads for a second week after rising 2-1 last week.
As we do each Wednesday (the day that the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot 100 is compiled each week), let’s run down the numbers behind the chart’s top 10, including the shut out of men in the top five again.
Below “Bass,” Taylor Swift‘s former two-week No. 1 “Shake It Off” holds at No. 2 for a second week; Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” stays at No. 3 for a third week after reaching No. 2; Iggy Azalea‘s “Black Widow,” featuring Rita Ora, rises to a new high (5-4); and Minaj’s “Bang Bang,” with Jessie J and Ariana Grande, backtracks to No. 5 from its No. 4 peak.
Thus, women control the top five exclusively for a second straight week. As noted in last week’s “Ask Billboard” mailbag, such diva domination is rare: this week’s chart (dated Sept. 27) marks just the eighth week in the Hot 100’s 56-year history in which women have locked men out of the top five spots. Until last week, women had last taken full control of the region on March 3, 2012, thanks to hits by Katy Perry, Adele (two), Whitney Houston and Kelly Clarkson.
Prior to March 2012, an all-female top five had last occurred on March 20, 1999, when songs by Cher, Houston (featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price), Monica, Mariah Carey and Sarah McLachlan infused the tier. The current top five (and last week’s), then, ties the record for the most women (seven, thanks to featured roles) appearing in an all-solo women top five simultaneously.
This week marks the first time since Feb. 27 and March 6, 1999, that women hold all top five ranks in back-to-back weeks.
Trainor’s debut single, released on Epic Records, rules the Hot 100 with top Airplay Gainer honors for a fifth consecutive week, surging 6-3 on Radio Songs with a 19 percent bump to 122 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS. It spends a fourth week atop Digital Songs (312,000 sold, essentially even from last week, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and returns for a second week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs (2-1), up by 19 percent to 15.5 million U.S. streams, according to BDS. It logs a third week on top of the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart with a 24 percent lift to 4.1 million.
As she leads the Hot 100 again, Trainor also debuts on the Billboard 200 with her debut four-song EP, Title. The set starts at No. 15 with 21,000 sold. Meanwhile, the release’s “Dear Future Husband” debuts on the Hot 100 at No. 94.
(How did Trainor find out she’d hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 last week? “Landed in Australia and got the link from my mom and started balling. Pilot thought I was crazy lol,” she tweeted. “Thank you to all the fans, my family, and my team for helping my first single get to Number 1!,” she later wrote. “I still don’t believe it! Can’t stop tearing up, I’m so happy! What an incredible year this has been. Thank you thank you thank you.”)
While “Bass” holds at No. 1 on the Hot 100, Swift makes a push to reclaim the throne: “Bass” gains by 11 percent in overall chart points, while “Shake” soars by 22 percent.
“Shake” claims top Digital and Streaming Gainer kudos, holding at No. 2 on Digital Songs, up by 10 percent to 309,000 sold, and powering 6-3 on Streaming Songs (11.1 million, up 58 percent). Why its big gain in streaming (when the song’s official video premiered on Aug. 18, the day that it was released)? A viral video on YouTube of a group of Kentucky fraternity brothers performing a lip dub to the song in their dorm. Swift personally Tweeted about the clip on Sept. 12, adding, “I’m personally inviting all of these guys (and a date!) to a show on tour next year, it’s on me. Nailed it, bros!”
On Radio Songs, “Shake” shimmies 7-4, up by 11 percent to 113 million.
At No. 3 on the Hot 100, Minaj’s “Anaconda” drops 1-2 after three weeks atop Streaming Songs, although up by 5 percent to 13.7 million. It retreats 5-6 on Digital Songs (126,000, down 3 percent) and climbs 36-31 on Radio Songs (38 million, up 10 percent). “Anaconda” notches a fourth week at No. 1 on both Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs.
Making the Nos. 3 and 4 spots on the Hot 100 an especially perilous area, “Black Widow” moves next to “Anaconda,” rising 5-4. “Widow” slinks 10-9 on Radio Songs (89 million, up 13 percent); dips 4-5 on Streaming Songs, but with a 2 percent increase to 7.6 million; and slips 4-5 on Digital Songs (127,000, down 11 percent).
Jessie J, Grande and Minaj’s “Bang Bang” (4-5 on the Hot 100) gains in airplay, roaring by 22 percent to 70 million, and charges 16-13 on Radio Songs. It keeps at No. 3 on Digital Songs (147,000, down 14 percent) and drops 3-4 on Streaming Songs (7.5 million, down 6 percent).
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Sam Smith’s No. 2-peaking “Stay With Me” holds at No. 6 and tallies a sixth week at No. 1 on Radio Songs (132 million, down 9 percent); Grande’s “Break Free,” featuring Zedd, rebounds 8-7 (after rising to No. 4) and leads Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for a fifth week; Maroon 5’s No. 6-peaking “Maps” travels 9-8; MAGIC!’s former six-week No. 1 “Rude” falls 7-9; and Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” returns to the region and its peak rank (11-10).
