Iggy Azalea notches a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX, and holds at No. 2 as a featured act on Ariana Grande’s “Problem.” Meanwhile, MAGIC! tops Digital Songs with “Rude,” which stays at No. 3 on the Hot 100, and Maroon 5 makes its way to the Hot 100, as “Maps” debuts at No. 14.
As we do each Wednesday, let’s look at the numbers behind the Hot 100’s top 10 and more.
Azalea continues her record-tying run in the Hot 100’s top two spots, as, for a fifth week, “Fancy” and “Problem” rank at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. How rare is it for Azalea to have logged five weeks at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously? For one, she ties Ashanti for the longest such run by a woman; Ashanti locked up Nos. 1 and 2 from April 20 through May 18, 2002, with her own “Foolish” and as a guest on Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv?” (Only one other woman has doubled up at Nos. 1 and 2 in the same week: Mariah Carey, with “We Belong Together” and “Shake It Off” on Sept. 10, 2005.)
Azalea also matches Pharrell Williams, who tallied a five-week stranglehold on the top two last year as featured on Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (with T.I.) and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” and T.I. (“Whatever You Like,” “Live Your Life,” featuring Rihanna) in 2008 for the longest duopoly at Nos. 1 and 2 since OutKast held the ranks for eight straight weeks in 2003-04 with “Hey Ya!” and “The Way You Move” (featuring Sleepy Brown). The only other acts to have strung together at least five weeks at Nos. 1 and 2 at the same time are the Bee Gees (five, 1978) and the Beatles, who hold the record with 10 in a row in 1964.

“Fancy” continues its Hot 100 domination with a second week at No. 1 on Radio Songs, growing by 3 percent to 150 million in all-format audience, according to Nielsen BDS. It logs a sixth week at No. 1 on Streaming Songs, down by 5 percent to 11.6 million U.S. streams, according to BDS. On Digital Songs, “Fancy” drops 1-2 after four weeks on top (195,000 downloads sold, down 14 percent, in the tracking week ending on June 22, according to Nielsen SoundScan).
“Fancy” again fights off “Problem” for the Hot 100’s top rank, with the latter also gaining at radio but slipping in sales and streaming. “Problem” pushes 3-2 on Radio Songs, up by 12 percent to 142 million. It holds at its No. 2 peak on Streaming Songs (9.4 million, down 11 percent) and No. 3 on Digital Songs (162,000, down 13 percent), which it led for three frames.
With “Fancy” and “Problem” down by 6 and 5 percent, respectively, in overall Hot 100 points, the former claims 16 percent more points than the latter, a margin in line with the difference between the two titles the past three weeks.
“Fancy” leads the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts for a fifth and 10th week, respectively. It tops the Songs of the Summer ranking for a fourth week, remaining the only song that has held the No. 1 spot since the summer-y summary returned after Memorial Day.
Below “Fancy” and “Problem,” Canadian pop/reggae quartet MAGIC! bullets for a second week at its No. 3 Hot 100 highpoint with its debut hit “Rude,” which takes over atop Digital Songs (2-1), gaining by 1 percent to 210,000. Quick quiz: Of the 163 prior Digital Songs No. 1s since the chart began contributing to the Hot 100 the week of Feb. 12, 2005, only one previous leader was also a reggae song. Can you name it? Answer at the end of this story.
“Rude” also rises in streaming and airplay. It roars 9-4 on Streaming Songs, up by 15 percent to 6.8 million, and 8-5 on Radio Songs (108 million, up 22 percent). With the song up by 10 percent in overall Hot 100 points, it could threaten to break up the “Fancy”/”Problem” logjam in the top two perhaps as soon as next week.
Two songs enter the Hot 100’s top five, led by Norwegian pop duo Nico & Vinz, whose “Am I Wrong” jumps 7-4 (after reaching No. 6 three weeks ago) with top Airplay Gainer honors. The pair’s debut hit climbs 5-3 on Radio Songs (125 million, up 23 percent). It holds at No. 5 on Digital Songs (140,000, down 3 percent), after rising to No. 3 three weeks ago, and rebounds 15-12 (a new peak) on Streaming Songs with a 3 percent advance to 4.4 million.
As he debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with his debut full-length album “In the Lonely Hour,” Sam Smith soars 10-5 on the Hot 100 with “Stay With Me.” The U.K. pop singer/songwriter’s ballad keeps at No. 4 on Digital Songs (148,000, down 10 percent), reaches the Radio Songs top 10 (14-9; 79 million, up 19 percent) and bounds 33-20 on Streaming Songs (2.8 million, up 26 percent). (The song’s sales slide is owed to iTunes customers who opted to “complete” their purchase of Smith’s album by upgrading their earlier purchases of “Stay” to the entire album. Effectively, consumers who completed the set were returning the song, thus translating to its sales chart slip. For the purposes of the Hot 100, however, aggregate sales contribute to the song’s overall point total.)
“Stay” is fast becoming a multi-format radio hit, crowning Adult Alternative Songs (2-1) and jumping 10-8 on Adult Pop Songs, 15-14 on Pop Songs, 21-15 on Adult Contemporary and 21-20 on Adult R&B Songs, while debuting at No. 35 on Rhythmic Songs.
Smith concurrently climbs 14-12 with his third top 20 Hot 100 hit, Disclosure’s “Latch,” on which he’s featured. (In his first visit, as featured on Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” he reached No. 19.)
Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Jason Derulo’s “Wiggle,” featuring Snoop Dogg, retreats to No. 6 from its No. 5 highpoint; John Legend’s former three-week No. 1 “All of Me” drops 4-7; Calvin Harris’ “Summer” ascends to a new peak (9-8) and dethrones DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What” (6-9) on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, which the latter had led for 12 weeks; and Pharrell Williams’ former 10-week Hot 100 No. 1 “Happy” falls 8-10.
Just outside the Hot 100’s top 10, Maroon 5 makes its way to a lofty No. 14 debut with “Maps” (marking the highest start by a group this year). It enters Digital Songs at No. 6 with 138,000 first-week downloads sold and Radio Songs at No. 32 with 40 million impressions in its first full-week of availability, while adding 1.3 million opening-week streams. “Maps” made instant waves on Twitter following its release on June 16, when it propelled to No. 1 on Billboard’s Trending 140 real-time chart; it led again the following day. The song enters at No. 1 on the weekly Billboard Twitter Top Tracks chart, ranking as the most-shared song on Twitter during the list’s tracking week.
“Maps” is the lead single from Maroon 5’s fifth studio album, “V,” due Sept. 2. The band’s last set, 2012’s “Overexposed,” produced four Hot 100 top 10s, including the No. 2-peaking lead cut “Payphone” (featuring Wiz Khalifa) and the nine-week No. 1 “One More Night.” (“Payphone” debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on Digital Songs with 493,000 sold in its first week.)
Quiz answer: Until MAGIC!’s “Rude” this week, the only reggae tune to top Digital Songs was Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” in 2007. Both songs have topped the Reggae Digital Songs list, where “Rude” reigns for a third week this week.
