The set starts with 22,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Of that sum, 17,000 units are via album sales.
Paramore has notched three Top Rock Albums No. 1s; the band’s previous three LPs debuted on top — 2017’s After Laughter, 2013’s self-titled LP and 2009’s Brand New Eyes.
With her solo coronation, Williams is the first woman to have led Top Rock Albums both on her own and with a group.
She is the second solo woman to lead Top Rock Albums in 2020, following Fiona Apple, whose Fetch the Bolt Cutters started at No. 1 earlier this month. This year marks the first in which two solo women having reigned since 2015, when Brandi Carlile and Courtney Barnett led with The Firewatcher’s Daughter and Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, respectively.
On the all-format Billboard 200, Petals for Armor bows at No. 18. Paramore has earned four top 20 entries on the chart; three have hit the top 10, including one No. 1, the group’s 2013 eponymous set.
Concurrently, two songs from Williams’ release reach the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Rock Songs chart: lead single “Simmer” re-enters at No. 28, after hitting No. 7 in February, and “Dead Horse” debuts at No. 36. (Another song from the set, “Leave It Alone,” reached No. 39 in February.)
“Simmer” peaked at No. 21 on the Alternative Songs airplay chart in April. It became Williams’ second entry on the chart, following her featured turn on CHVRCHES‘ “Bury It” (No. 31, 2016). Paramore has earned five top 10s, led by its breakthrough hit “Misery Business” (No. 3, 2007).
Petals for Armor follows a pair of EPs, Petals for Armor I and II (released in February and April, respectively), that consist of songs that made the eventual LP.
