‘Hamilton’ Surpasses ‘Jersey Boys’ to Become Fifth-Biggest-Selling Cast Album Since 1991
The original Broadway cast recording of "Hamilton: An American Musical" has surpassed "Jersey Boys" to become the fifth-biggest selling cast album since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991.
The original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton: An American Musical continues to be a steady seller, as the album has now surpassed the sales of another smash cast recording: Jersey Boys.
In the week ending Jan. 25, Hamilton skipped past the original Broadway cast recording of Jersey Boys in total sales. Now, in the week ending Feb. 8, Hamilton has sold 1.460 million, versus Jersey Boys’ 1.445 million.
Hamilton now reigns as the fifth-largest-selling cast album since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991.
Ahead of Hamilton and Jersey Boys on the top-selling cast albums list of the Nielsen era: the highlights edition of the original London cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera, with 4.972 million sold; the original Broadway cast recording of Wicked (2.728 million); the original cast recording of Mamma Mia! (1.717 million); and the original Broadway cast recording of Les Miserables (1.661 million).
On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Feb. 17), Hamilton rises 26-24 in its 124th consecutive week on the list. The album peaked at No. 3 on the July 2, 2016-dated list.
Hamilton: An American Musical — created by Lin-Manuel Miranda — opened off-Broadway at New York’s Public Theater on Jan. 20, 2015. It officially opened on Broadway on Aug. 6 of that same year. The cast recording was released on Sept. 25, 2015. The musical is currently playing on Broadway, has residency shows in Chicago and London, and a U.S. touring production on the road through at least 2020.
