Hailee Steinfeld Finds ‘Love’ on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks

Hailee Steinfeld's first single starts with strong radio, digital and social support, while veteran act Iron Maiden returns after five years. Plus, chart moves by MKTO and Janelle Monae!

Academy Award-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld (of the 2010 film True Grit and this year’s Pitch Perfect 2, as well as Taylor Swift’s star-studded “Bad Blood” video) launches onto Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks (dated Aug. 29) at No. 24 with her debut single, “Love Myself.” Several of Steinfeld’s former co-stars and friends shared their affection for the cut on Twitter; Demi Lovato, Austin Mahone and Brittany Snow were just a few of the stars offering approval. The song, which also enters the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 96, previews the 18-year-old’s debut album for Republic Records, possibly due by the end of the year.


Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks is a weekly ranking of the most shared and/or mentioned songs on Twitter in the U.S., ranked by the volume of shares over a seven-day period (Monday to Sunday).

Steinfeld’s catchy tune also starts with 841,000 U.S. streams for the week ending Aug. 16, according to Nielsen Music. In addition to its strong streaming start, “Love Myself” makes a big entrance on radio, entering at No. 27 on Pop Songs. (She makes the highest start on the airplay chart by a woman, in a lead role and unaccompanied by another act, since Natalie Imbruglia launched at No. 26 with “Torn” in 1998; “Torn” would go on to spend a lofty 11 weeks at No. 1 on Pop Songs.) The social buzz also bumps Steinfeld’s Twitter mentions to 67,000 for the week, according to Next Big Sound, a jump of 29 percent.

Good Start for ‘Bad Girls’: Pop duo MKTO earns its Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks debut as “Bad Girls” enters at No. 8. The Columbia Records pair — Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller — scores the impressive arrival with help from labelmate Liam Payne of One Direction, who called the cut “a great song” on Twitter on Aug. 8. “Girls” is the title track from the duo’s 2015 EP, released on July 24. The set follows the MKTO’s self-titled debut album, whose breakout hit “Classic” reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 2014.

Iron Maiden’s Entry: Down the list, legendary heavy metal band Iron Maiden flashes onto the survey at No. 23 for the first time with “Speed of Light.” The title reaches the survey in large part through its music video, which pays tribute to several eras of video games from the 1970s to the present. “Light” previews The Book of Souls, the group’s first double studio album and first studio set since The Final Frontier in 2010. Iron Maiden’s return finds a welcome audience, with Twitter mentions rising to 16,000 for the week ending Aug. 16, according to Next Big Sound (up 259 percent).

Janelle Raises ‘Hell’: Meanwhile, Janelle Monae bows at No. 35 with “Hell You Talmbout,” a track inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The cut features several of her Wondaland Records’ labelmates, including Jidenna and Roman GianArthur, and has collected more than 276,000 global plays since Monae posted the song on SoundCloud on Aug. 13. “Talmbout” continues the recent trend of socially-conscious tracks addressing police brutality to reach Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks, including Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” (No. 4, July) and Prince’s “Baltimore” (No. 8, May).

Alli Simpson Rolls On: Seventeen-year-old Australian act Alli Simpson scores her Billboard charts debut as her “Roll ‘Em Up” debuts on Top Tracks at No. 39. The cut, which features social media stars Jack & Jack, was written by her brother, Cody Simpson, and Selena Gomez. The pair originally planned on releasing the track together before giving it to Alli. “Roll” spins to a strong start thanks to its music video, which has gathered more than 498,000 global views on YouTube since its Aug. 12 release.
