Grammy Awards Yield Album Gains for Bruno Mars, Chris Stapleton, Childish Gambino & More

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Feb. 10), a bevy of titles see big gains in the wake of the 2018 Grammy Awards on Jan. 28. The latest chart reflects the tracking week ending Feb. 1.

Bruno Mars, who won all six of the awards for which he was nominated, vaults from No. 10 to No. 4 with his album of the year winner 24K Magic (49,000 equivalent album units; up 89 percent, according to Nielsen Music). With a 23,000-unit rise, the album tallies the chart’s largest unit increase, granting 24K Magic the Greatest Gainer award for the week. During the broadcast, Mars performed latest 24K Magic single “Finesse,” with Cardi B (at No. 3 on the Feb. 10 Billboard Hot 100), and accepted three of his trophies (for album of the year, record of the year, and song of the year). His other three awards were presented earlier in the day, before the live CBS-TV broadcast began.

Childish Gambino — a performer and winner for best traditional R&B performance (for “Redbone”) — nabs the Billboard 200’s largest percentage gain. His album Awaken, My Love! zooms 112-38 with a 122 percent lift in units (rising to 14,000 earned). “Redbone,” which is featured on Awaken, was also nominated for record of the year, while the Awaken set itself was also up for album of the year.

Collectively, the five titles nominated for album of the year (24K Magic, Awaken, JAY-Z’s 4:44, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. and Lorde’s Melodrama) earned a 64 percent unit increase in the week ending Feb. 1 (rising from 71,000 to 116,000 units earned).

Other Grammy-related gainers in the top 20 of the chart include Lamar’s DAMN. (holding at No. 6, but up 31 percent to 38,000 units), Khalid’s American Teen (15-9 with 27,000 units; up 12 percent), SZA’s Ctrl (22-14 with 23,000 units; up 29 percent), Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 2 (55-18 with 20,000 units; up 100 percent) and the 2018 Grammy Nominees compilation (32-20 with 18,000 units; up 29 percent).

Lamar performed on the show and won five awards in total (including two that were presented on-air), five-time nominee Khalid performed and was nominated in two categories presented on-air (best new artist and song of the year), SZA was also a five-time nominee and performer, and Stapleton performed and won three trophies (including one presented on-air, best country album, for From A Room: Volume 1).

Further down the list, performer and nominee P!nk sees her latest album Beautiful Trauma rise 43-22 (18,000 units; up 47 percent), Stapleton’s Traveller climbs 45-24 (17,000 units; up 49 percent), while his From A Room: Volume 1 zips 74-28 (16,000 units; up 92 percent). 

Grammy performer Elton John (who duetted with Miley Cyrus on his 1972 hit “Tiny Dancer”) ascends 75-36 with his newest greatest hits album Diamonds (14,000 units; up 75 percent), performer/nominee Kesha vaults 127-45 with Rainbow (12,000 units; up 102 percent) and fellow performer/nominee Logic rises 73-56 with Everybody (10,000 units; up 24 percent).

Other Grammy bumps in the top 100 of the chart: JAY-Z’s 4:44 (a re-entry at No. 84 with 8,000 units; up 76 percent), Lorde’s Melodrama (152-91 with 7,000 units; up 42 percent), Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans (145-92 with 7,000 units; up 36 percent) and Unorthodox Jukebox (160-96 with 7,000 units; up 43 percent) and performer and nominee DJ Khaled’s Grateful (104-97 with 7,000 units; up 10 percent).

Just outside the top 100, performer and nominee Lady Gaga returns with Joanne (a re-entry at No. 101 with 7,000 units; up 126 percent).
