After the Chicago Cubs became World Series champions (in the early hours of Nov. 3) after their fabled 108-year title drought, Steve Goodman’s 1984 anthem “Go, Cubs, Go” likewise ends a long journey, making Billboard‘s charts for the first time.
The Cubs’ victory anthem, which plays at the end of every Cubs home win at Wrigley Field, enters the Pop Digital Song Sales chart (dated Nov. 19) at No. 21 and the Digital Song Sales chart at No. 49 with 15,000 downloads in the week ending Nov. 3, according to Nielsen Music, a 125 percent gain from the previous week.
“Go, Cubs, Go” also raked in 2.5 million U.S. streams in the tracking week (the bulk from YouTube clicks), a 110 percent increase. In all, the song’s sales and streams (it garnered no significant airplay last week) also spark its debut at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100’s Bubbling Under chart.
The track by the late Goodman additionally climbs to No. 3 (from No. 22) on Spotify’s Viral 50 and crowns the LyricFind U.S. chart (up from No. 8) a week after debuting on each list. The LyricFind U.S. chart ranks the fastest momentum-gaining tracks in lyric-search queries in the U.S., with data provided by more than 4,000 publishers and utilized by more than 100 services, including Amazon, Pandora, Deezer, Shazam, Microsoft, Yahoo, SoundHound and iHeartRadio.
While the latest sales and streaming charts’ tracking week ended Nov. 3, “Go, Cubs, Go” received further national exposure when the Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo, David Ross and Dexter Fowler, along with superfan and Saturday Night Live alum Bill Murray, performed the song on SNL‘s Nov. 5 episode.
