The girl group vocalist’s house-inspired Free Somebody: The First Mini Album release starts at No. 3 on the World Albums, where it’s this week’s Hot Shot Debut. Meanwhile, its title track “Free Somebody” starts at No. 8 on the World Digital Songs tally.
Free Somebody sees Luna — who’s been predominately known for approaching big-vocal ballads like “It Was Love” with Block B‘s Zico earlier this year — making a refreshingly unexpected move with her sound and diving into the deep house genre. At its center is the glitch-y, dance-y title track that serves both a grand showcase for Luna’s singing chops and her knack to ride a slick, shimmering beat. The EP finds a nice balance of feel-good pop with drop-heavy EDM including standouts like the gut-punching ballad “Galaxy” and the bouncy “Keep on Doin’.”
The release follows Luna’s first solo dip into the EDM genre when she released “Wave” that featured Dutch producer R3hab and her f(x) band mate Amber.
For those keeping track, Luna marks the latest of many K-pop singers making their marks as solo acts away from their groups this year. While many are attempting solo releases, not all have landed on World Albums. Check out a list below of the artists to chart within the Top 10 of the World Albums chart in 2016 so far with their solo releases including members of Super Junior, INFINITE, Girls’ Generation and SHINee:
