Fitz and the Tantrums hit the top 10 of Billboard‘s Hot Rock Songs chart (dated Aug. 20) for the first time with “HandClap.” In its 19th week on the chart, the song rises 13-10. Driving the leap: a 36 percent gain to 13,000 downloads sold in the week ending Aug. 4, according to Nielsen Music, after the band’s performance of the song on NBC’s America’s Got Talent on Aug. 3.
Long established at radio, “HandClap” logs a 15th straight week in the top 10 of the Alternative Songs airplay chart, dropping 8-9 after peaking at No. 5 in July. It’s also No. 11 on Rock Airplay (after peaking at No. 7) with 7 million all-rock format audience impressions.
Adding to its visibility, the song led the May and June Billboard & Clio’s Top Commercials charts, powered by Shazam, fueled by its inclusion in an ad for FIAT.
As the group earns its first Hot Rock Songs top 10, it passes its prior No. 11 best, set by “The Walker” in April 2014.
Fitz and the Tantrums, the band’s third studio album, debuted at Nos. 4 and 6 on the Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts (dated July 2), respectively, with 16,000 copies sold. It also opened and peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard 200, marking the band’s highest debut and peak yet.
