EXO and CL See Sales and Social Leaps After Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony

For the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, EXO and CL captivated the world's attention and earned huge gains in U.S. song sales and online social activity.

All eyes were on South Korea for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games and in its final minutes, some of the country’s biggest superstars captivated the world’s attention and earned huge gains in song sales and online social activity.

Leading the charge was CL with her 2013 solo single “The Baddest Female” returning to Billboard‘s World Digital Song Sales chart at No. 11 for its eighth overall charting week. The track sold 1,000 copies in America for the week of Feb. 22 – March 1, according to Nielsen Music — up a humongous 4,505 percent in sales from the week before. The song originally peaked at No. 4 on World Digital Song Sales and has sold 26,000 copies in the U.S. to date.


CL also performed a snippet of “I Am the Best,” the signature song of her former girl group 2NE1. The track returns to the chart at No. 17 this week for it 121st week overall on the chart to date. It previously hit the No. 1 spot on World Digital Songs when it was featured in a popular Microsoft ad and gained some domestic airplay.

EXO also made a big splash with their Olympic showing as their 2017 single “Power” also returns to World Digital Song Sales at No. 13 for its seventh overall week on the tally. “Power” also sold an additional 1,000 copies, up 491 percent in sales. “Power” previously peaked at No. 3 on the chart and has now sold 9,000 downloads in the U.S.


Viewers showed their appreciation for EXO’s performance online with the boy band receiving an incredible 44.4 million Twitter mentions in the tracking week, (up 27 percent, according to Next Big Sound) and the guys scoring 743,000 Twitter reactions (up 1,554 percent) as well as 2.2 million Instagram interactions (up 136 percent).

EXO added 74,000 new Twitter followers and 62,000 new Instagram followers for the week too. EXO stays strong at No. 2 on Billboard‘s Social 50 chart where they have ranked for the past six weeks.
