EXO’s Baekhyun Goes Top 5 on World & Heatseekers Albums Charts With ‘City Lights’ Solo Debut

EXO member Baekhyun enters more Billboard charts with his official solo debut 'City Lights: The 1st Mini Album.'

Baekhyun had already set chart records as one of K-pop’s budding solo stars, now the EXO member enters more Billboard charts with his official solo debut.

The singer-songwriter’s new City Lights: The 1st Mini Album debuts at No. 5 on World Albums on the chart dated July 20, 2019. Upon its July 10 release, the EP sold 1,000 copies in the week ending July 11 according to Nielsen Music, meaning it achieved the sales feat despite less than two full days of sales for this week’s charts.

City Lights also marks a super-strong start debuting at No. 4 the Heatseekers Albums chart, a tally that sees far fewer K-pop acts and indicates a Billboard 200 debut wasn’t far off. The No. 4 position is particularly impressive as the last solo K-pop act to enter the Heatseekers chart higher was G-Dragon in June of 2017 when his Kwon Ji Yong album hit No. 1 on the tally and slid into the Billboard 200.

While Baekhyun’s been known for his powerful and multifaceted vocals, City Lights allows the 27-year-old’s multiple octaves to experiment in a new soundscape. The smoky, R&B-tinged sounds in lead single “UN Village,” sultry album standout “Betcha,” and the Beenzino-featuring, Cha Cha Malone–produced “Stay Up” all show a style fully independent of the powerhouse pop embraced by EXO. Baekhyun’s been able to show off his vocal chops on previous ballad tracks and other duets or collaborations, but City Lights puts the focus fully on Baekhyun to further show his growing scope as an artist.

Baekhyun’s best-selling song in America is his 2015 soundtrack single “Beautiful,” which has sold 6,000 copies in America according to Nielsen Music, meanwhile his highest-charting solo song is “Dream” featuring Bae Suzy, that hit No. 3 on World Digital Song Sales in early 2016.
