Executive Turntable: Hires at Sony, Promotions at Mono Music Group, Big Deal & More

Sony Music Entertainment announced on Feb. 2 that Dasha Smith Dwin has been named executive vp and global chief human resources officer, effective Monday, Feb. 5.

Sony Music Entertainment announced on Feb. 2 that Dasha Smith Dwin has been named executive vp and global chief human resources officer, effective Monday, Feb. 5.

Dwin will support CEO Rob Stringer and COO Kevin Kelleher in the New York office, taking on the lead human resources functions, including talent acquisition, talent management, total rewards and organizational development to support global operations at Sony Music.

Prior to joining Sony, Dwin worked with the global alternative asset management firm GCM Grosvenor, where she helped manage day-to-day operations.

“We sought an innovative and visionary leader of our global Human Resources business. We found that person in Dasha,” said Stringer in a statement. “I’m excited to welcome her to Sony Music and believe she will be an invaluable member of our executive team. The world is obviously changing and we believe this appointment gives Sony Music an opportunity to be a leader in Human Resources, a strategic priority for our organization.”


Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Creative Nation announced Jan. 30 the signing of a worldwide publishing agreement with Grammy award-winning songwriter and producer Luke Laird.

Laird’s prolific songwriting career has landed him at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 a total of 23 times, for tracks including “Drink in My Hand” by Eric Church, “Downtown” by Lady Antebellum and “Last Name” by Carrie Underwood.

In addition to winning best country album at both the Grammys and the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2014 as a producer on Kacey Musgraves’ Same Different Trailer Park, Laird has racked up a number of accolades. On six separate occasions, the Country Music Association has recognized him with the Triple Play Award, signifying three No. 1 singles within a 12-month period. Laird has also received song of the year and songwriter of the year awards from BMI, as well as songwriter of the year from ACM.


On Jan. 31, Mono Music Group announced producer Jose “Angel Lopez” Velazquez as senior vp of A&R. Velazquez came up under the guidance of Timbaland, who made the announcement along with Mono Music Group president Gary Marella and executive vp Marcus Spence.

“Under the guidance of Timbaland, Angel has quickly become one of the best producers in the business having already worked on such hits at Sam Smith’s ‘Pray,’ Wisin’s ‘Move Your Body’ and countless other projects with Tim. He’s now becoming a great executive and will play an important role in the future growth of our company” said Marella. 


Big Deal Music Group announced on Jan. 30 the executive promotion of four team members: Ashley Alexander, Laila BengharsaAmber Packer and Mary Margaret Rogers all now serve as creative directors the publishing company. 

Bengharsa, Alexander and Packer are headquartered in the firm’s Los Angeles office, while Rogers is based in the New York office. All four previously served as A&R coordinators.
