Eminem bags his tenth No. 1 album in Australia with Music To Be Murdered By (Interscope/Universal), while The Weeknd scores his first leader on the singles chart with “Blinding Lights” (Republic/Universal).
Music To Be Murdered By, a surprise release on Jan. 17, ignites an explosion of Marshall Mathers chart activity as five tracks from it impact the ARIA Singles Chart and two sets, Curtain Call: The Hits and Kamikaze, return to this week’s ARIA Albums Chart at No. 43 and No 44, respectively.
Em’s eleventh studio effort holds off Halsey’s Manic (Capitol/EMI), which debuts at No. 2. It’s the American singer and songwriter’s third consecutive No. 2 album on the national survey, after Badlands (September 2015) and Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (June 2017).
Completing an all-new top three is Mac Miller’s Circles (Warner). The rapper’s posthumous release becomes his highest charting album Down Under, eclipsing Swimming, which peaked at No. 7 in September 2018.
Harry Styles’ sophomore album Fine Line (Columbia/Sony) dips 2-4 and Billie Eilish, who on the weekend won the annual triple j Hottest 100 countdown with “Bad Guy,” sees her debut LP When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (Intescope/Universal) dip 3-5.
Aussie alternative rock legends Magic Dirt snare an ARIA Albums Chart debut for Life Was Better (RMT/Inertia), an EP released more than a quarter century ago.
First released by the Adalita-led rockers in November 1994, Life Was Better originally reached No. 77 on the ARIA Singles Chart in 1994. Owing to a change in the chart rules since, ARIA explains, the recording now qualifies for the albums list, where it starts at No. 26. It bows No. 1 on this week’s ARIA Vinyl Albums Chart.
Over on the ARIA Singles Chart, The Weeknd earns his first leader with “Blinding Lights,” which rises 2-1 in its eighth week on the tally. Until now, the Canadian R&B singer’s chart best was No. 2, which he hit on two occasions, with “Can’t Feel My Face” (July 2015) and “Starboy” (November 2016).
The Weeknd also takes the honor of knocking “Dance Monkey” (Bad Batch/Sony) from the top of the chart. Tones And I’s monster hit spent 24 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1, though it did briefly lose its crown at Christmas. “Dance Monkey” slips 1-2 and is eight-times platinum certified.
Eminem’s got a monster of his own in “Godzilla,” featuring the late Juice WRLD. It’s new at No. 3, ahead of Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” (down 3-4, via Warner UK) and Roddy Ricch’s viral track “The Box” (Atlantic/Warner), which rises 7-5 for a new peak No. 5.
