Elvie Shane’s ‘My Boy’ Tops Country Airplay Chart: ‘We’ve Been Told for 5 Years That This Song Was a No. 1’

Elvie Shane’s debut single “My Boy” bounds from No. 5 to No. 1 in its 54th week on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart (dated Oct. 23). In the week ending Oct. 17, the song gained by 23% to 29.5 million audience impressions, according to MRC Data.
Shane wrote “My Boy” with Nick Columbia, Lee Starr and Russell Sutton. It was produced by Oscar Charles.
“We’ve been told for five years that this song was a No. 1,” Shane tells Billboard. “I always found it hard to believe that I could be part of something like that. Looks like country fans and country radio just said, ‘Believe it!'”
“This song was originally written from my perspective as a stepfather,” Shane notes. “I feel so blessed knowing it is now so many other families’ song as well. A big thank you to ‘my boy’ for the inspiration.”
On Hot Country Songs, which blends airplay, sales and streaming data, “My Boy” pushes 7-4 for a new high, up 20% to 6.6 million U.S. streams and less than 1% to 2,000 sold.
“My Boy” is from the Caneyville, Ky., native’s debut LP, Backslider, due Oct. 29.

‘YOU’ GO, PT. 1: Kenny Chesney banks his 59th Country Airplay top 10, as “Knowing You” lifts 11-9 (18.2 million, up 3%). It’s the fourth single and fourth top 10 from Here and Now, which launched as Chesney’s 17th No. 1 on Top Country Albums and his ninth leader on the all-genre Billboard 200 in May 2020.
The set’s “Tip of My Tongue” reached No. 8 on Country Airplay in December 2019, followed by its title track, which became Chesney’s 31st No. 1 in July 2020, and “Happy Does” (No. 2, this January).
Chesney, who banked his first Country Airplay top 10 in 1995 with the No. 6-peaking “Fall in Love,” moves solely into second place for the most top 10s since the chart began in 1990, passing Tim McGraw. George Strait leads with 61 top 10s.
‘YOU’ GO, PT. 2: Dustin Lynch‘s “Thinking ‘Bout You, featuring MacKenzie Porter, climbs 12-10 on Country Airplay (17.7 million, up 9%). Lynch lands his 10th top 10 and Porter earns her first.
‘LEAVE’ ENTERS TOP 10: Chris Stapleton tallies his fifth Hot Country Songs top 10, as “You Should Probably Leave” ascends 11-10. The track rises 19-18 on Country Airplay (11.2 million in audience, up 1%) and drew 8.5 million streams and sold 2,700 in the tracking week.
The song follows “Starting Over,” which became Stapleton’s second Hot Country Songs No. 1 in April. Both singles are from his Starting Over LP, which launched as fourth Top Country Albums leader in November 2020.

Lead Human single “‘Til You Can’t” jumps 54-49 on Country Airplay (1.2 million, up 31%).
TALKIN’ ‘TEQUILA’: Old Dominion scores its fourth Top Country Albums top 10 as Time, Tequila & Therapy arrives at No. 4 (17,000 units). It follows the group’s self-titled LP, which began at the apex in November 2019; Happy Endings, which debuted atop the chart in September 2017; and Meat and Candy, which hit No. 3 in March 2016.
“I Was on a Boat That Day,” the new release’s first single, returns to its No. 8 high on Hot Country Songs.
