“Cold Heart” takes the throne — which Ed Sheeran‘s “Shivers” had been occupying for the last four weeks (and Sheeran himself had been holding down for 11 more weeks prior with “Bad Habits”) — after spending three consecutive weeks at No. 2. One day prior, Sheeran had asked his fans to “go buy/stream/download” “Cold Heart” so that John could dethrone him and achieve the historical feat.
The song marks the Rocket Man’s eighth No. 1 U.K. single in his decades-spanning career, and it’s been 16 years since his last one after he was featured on 2pac‘s posthumous 2005 single “Ghetto Gospel.”
When “Cold Heart” first broke into the top 10 of the U.K. Singles Chart, John became the first artist in history to score a U.K. top 10 hit in six different decades. The song, which was originally released Aug. 13 via EMI and Mercury Records, arrived ahead of his forthcoming collaborative studio album, The Lockdown Sessions, set for release next Friday.
The 74-year-old English hitmaker took to Instagram while recovering from hip-replacement surgery to celebrate his latest success.
“We did it – UK NUMBER 1!! I cannot begin to tell you how much this means to me,” an incredibly and adorably ecstatic John wrote on Instagram while posing with his No. 1 plaque. “Thank you Dua, PNAU and to everyone who streamed, downloaded, and listened to Cold Heart! You’ve made me feel infinitely better after my surgery and I can’t wait for you to hear the whole of ‘The Lockdown Sessions’ when it comes out next week!”
Lipa posed with her No. 1 plaque as well on Instagram, writing underneath images of her wearing a T-shirt that bears her record-shattering collaborator’s name, “UK NUMBER 1 BABY – COLD HEART @ELTONJOHN sharing this moment with my musical hero and dear friend means the world to me!! What a magical day and journey this has been (ofcourse wore my Elton teee to the studio today) !! We thank u and luv uuuuuu x.”
“Cold Heart” marks Lipa’s third overall U.K. No. 1 hit, following “New Rules” in 2017 and “One Kiss” with Calvin Harris in 2018.
