Ella Mai Crowns Emerging Artists Chart, as ‘Boo’d Up’ Hits Hot 100’s Top 40

Ella Mai is the top emerging act in the U.S. for the first time, as the British singer-songwriter rises from No. 5 to No. 1 on Billboard's Emerging Artists chart (dated May 12).

Ella Mai is the top emerging act in the U.S. for the first time, as the British singer-songwriter rises from No. 5 to No. 1 on Billboard‘s Emerging Artists chart (dated May 12).

Mai, 23, tops the tally on the strength of her EP Ready, which debuts at No. 12 on the Top R&B Albums chart, No. 43 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 87 on the Billboard 200 with 7,000 equivalent album units (up 52 percent) in the week ending May 3, according to Nielsen Music.

Mai released Ready in February 2017, but the set has grown thanks to its breakout track “Boo’d Up.” Her first song to appear on any Billboard chart vaults from No. 55 to No. 37 on the Hot 100, while rising 34-24 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The single drew 27.8 million radio audience impressions (up 17 percent) and 15.6 million U.S. streams (up 42 percent) and sold 9,000 downloads (up 51 percent) in the tracking week.

The Emerging Artists chart ranks the most popular developing artists of the week, using the same formula as the all-encompassing Billboard Artist 100, which measures artist activity across multiple Billboard charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 and the Social 50. (The Artist 100 lists the most popular acts, overall, of the week.) However, the Emerging Artists chart excludes acts that have notched a top 25 entry on either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, as well as artists that have achieved two or more top 10s on Billboard‘s “Hot” song genre charts and/or consumption-based “Top” album genre rankings.

Directly below Mai, 11-year-old Mason Ramsey, dubbed “Yodel Boy” online, launches at No. 2 on Emerging Artists, as his debut track “Famous” arrives at No. 4 on Hot Country Songs and No. 62 on the Hot 100 with 10.8 million U.S. streams and 19,000 sold. Ramsey’s profile has skyrocketed after a clip of him yodeling in a Walmart went viral.

Bad Wolves dip 2-3 on Emerging Artists and Jordan Davis falls 3-4, while Morgan Wallen ascends 9-5, reaching the top five for the first time as his breakout single “Up Down,” featuring Florida Georgia Line, hits the top 10 on Hot Country Songs.

Plus, El Chombo surges 27-9 on Emerging Artists as his viral hit “Dame Tu Cosita” ascends to No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart.
