Ella Mai captures her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart as her eponymous full-length debut starts at the summit. Ella Mai earned 69,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 18, according to Nielsen Music.
Mai contains the British singer-songwriter’s breakthrough hits, “Boo’d Up” and “Trip.” The former dominated the Hot R&B Songs chart for 13 weeks earlier this year and set a new record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
“Trip,” meanwhile, records a third straight frame at No. 1 on Hot R&B Songs this week and closes in on the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 with a 16-11 gain.
In addition to her two breakout hits, Mai’s arrival prompts five debuts on Hot R&B Songs: “Gut Feeling,” featuring H.E.R. (No. 11), the John Legend-assisted “Everything” (No. 14), “Good Bad” (No. 18), “Shot Clock” (No. 20) and “Sauce (No. 23.)
Meanwhile, two more of the album’s tracks achieve new bests: “Whatchamacallit,” featuring Chris Brown, climbs 9-7 in its second week on the survey, while “Naked” darts 21-17 in its sixth frame.
