Ed Sheeran Is Launching a Line of Signature Guitars

Ed Sheeran has a surprise new project — but it's not music. The 27-year-old smash singer-songwriter is launching his own acoustic guitar brand with Irish guitar maker Lowden, whose small models he frequently uses onstage.

“There are fewer guitar bands and fewer artists using guitars now, and not as many kids picking up guitars," Sheeran said in a release. "That is something I would like to change by getting these great quality guitars, made in Ireland, into kids’ hands and encouraging them to learn and progress.”

Sheeran announced the new line of eight models — "Sheeran By Lowden" — earlier this week at an event pegged to the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Conference in Anaheim, Calif. The partnership stems from a long friendship between Sheeran and the guitar company's owner George Lowden, who designed the popular, teeny "Wee Lowden" guitar in 2012 at the request of Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody as a gift for Sheeran. Sheeran's own collection will offer eight models in the company's Wee and similarly small S sizes.

In an Instagram post, Sheeran emphasized the new line's affordability, though the exact prices haven't yet been released. The company's original Wee Lowden guitar retails for between $4,390 and $5,800 a pop, depending on the wood used.

Adds Lowden: “We have been honoured over the past years that Ed has chosen to play Lowden guitars both on-stage and in the studio. We are delighted to have established a close ongoing relationship which has borne fruit recently through the birth of Sheeran by Lowden.”

Sheeran hasn't released new music since 2017, but the new announcement comes at a busy time for the star: He'll kick off the Latin America leg of his ÷ Tour in Brazil next month, and his monster hit "Shape of You" was just certified diamond.

I grew up wanting to play Lowden guitars, but they were so rare and so expensive I didn’t end up getting one til I was given one by my friend Gary from Snow Patrol in 2012. Through Gary I met George Lowden and he started making my tour guitars for me, which were amazing both on stage and in the studio. We have been talking for years about trying to make a guitar that was as amazing as a Lowden but in a price point that was the same as the regular guitar companies, and also be made in Ireland. We never thought it was possible, but George and his team managed it. I’m so honoured to launch our new guitar brand, Sheeran guitars by Lowden. These are without a doubt the best guitars at their price point, and just a joy to play. I hope you love them as much as me. Link is in my bio x
