Ed Sheeran Dominates U.K. Year-End Charts

Ed Sheeran ruled the U.K. charts like no other in 2017.

Ed Sheeran absolutely dominated the U.K.’s 2017 year-end charts by snagging the best-selling single, biggest-selling album and the market’s most-streamed track.

Sheeran’s hit “Shape Of You” shifted 3.2 million combined units to be the year’s best-selling (787,000 sales) and most-streamed track (248 million plays) and is one of four works by the singer to crack the year-end top 10, a list that includes “Castle On The Hill” (No. 3), “Galway Girl” (No. 5) and “Perfect” (No. 6), the Official Charts Company reports.

“Shape Of You” locked up the singles chart crown for a whopping 14 weeks and turbo-charged its parent Divide, which finished the year as the best-selling album on combined sales of 2.7 million, with CD and vinyl accounting for 1.7 million copies, according to new data published by the charts compiler.

Divide generated nearly 600,000 album equivalent streams and was downloaded more than 428,000 times during the year and was one of two Sheeran albums to crack the 2017 bestsellers top 10, with the Brit’s second album Multiply coming in at No. 6.

Sheeran’s latest album blasted out the blocks with a remarkable total of 672,000 combined units in its first week, good enough for the third fastest-seller ever, according to the OCC, and the highest-ever opening sale for a male artist. And he ended the year on a high as his single “Perfect” claimed the coveted Christmas No. 1.

The news comes as the BPI reports a surge in streaming and “resilient demand” for physical soundcarriers were behind a 9.5% rise in music consumption in 2017.

The best-selling tracks not released by Sheeran in 2017 were Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber’s remix of “Despacito,” which ended the year at No. 2 with 2.3 million combined sales, and French Montana featuring Swae Lee’s “Unforgettable,” the year’s No. 4-ranked track with 1.4 million combined sales, while albums titles from Rag’n’Bone Man, Sam Smith and Little Mix were among the most popular among British music fans. But no one could touch Sheeran in 2017.
