The song is Lipa’s first release since “Swan Song,” from the soundtrack to the film Alita: Battle Angel; while it didn’t reach the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot 100, the track hit No. 21 on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart in March.
Lipa had last appeared on the Hot 100 with “Electricity,” with Silk City (Diplo and Mark Ronson). The song reached No. 62 in January.
Following its release on Oct. 31, “Start” also debuts at No. 6 on the Digital Song Sales chart with 14,000 downloads sold and No. 28 on Streaming Songs with 13.2 million U.S. streams, according to Nielsen Music. The song also sports 10.2 million radio audience impressions, as it opens at No. 26 on Pop Songs.
Lipa previously reached the Hot 100’s top 40 with her breakout single “New Rules,” which rose to No. 6 in February 2018, and with her Calvin Harris collab “One Kiss,” which hit No. 26 that July.
“Start” is the lead single from her upcoming sophomore studio album. Her eponymous debut reached No. 27 on the Billboard 200 in February 2018 and has spent 96 total weeks on the survey.
Lipa is credited as a songwriter on the new song, with Ian Kirkpatrick, Caroline Ailin and Emily Warren. Kirkpatrick is also credited as the song’s sole producer.
