Dream Theater Nabs First No. 1 on Top Rock Albums

The rockers also gain their third No. 1 on Hard Rock Albums.

Dream Theater’s The Astonishing is as the prog-metal five-piece’s first No. 1 on Top Rock Albums, as the band’s 13th studio set starts with 30,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen Music.

Previously, the band peaked as high as No. 2 with 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings and 2011’s A Dramatic Turn of Events. The Astonishing also marks Dream Theater’s third No. 1 on Hard Rock Albums, following Black Clouds & Silver Linings and its 2013 self-titled record.

Both the Top Rock Albums and Hard Rock Albums charts began in 2006, by which point Dream Theater was already eight records-deep into its discography. On the Billboard 200, the act reached its best rank (No. 6) with Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The new album starts at No. 11.

Two other titles debut in the Top Rock Albums top 10: Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s Let Me Get By at No. 2 (25,000 sold), tying 2013’s Made Up Mind for the act’s best peak; and Dave’s Picks, Volume 17: Selland Arena, Fresno, CA 7/19/1974 by The Grateful Dead at No. 8 (14,000). The 16th edition of the Dave’s Picks series (Springfield Civic Center, Springfield, MA 3/28/73) debuted and peaked at No. 4 in November.
