D.R.A.M. is the third artist in the past year to reach No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with their debut chart hit (as a lead artist). He follows Desiigner (with “Panda,” which clocked two weeks at No. 1 on May 7 and May 14) and Alessia Cara (with “Here,” two weeks at No. 1 on Jan. 30 and Feb. 6).
“Broccoli,” featuring Lil Yachty, was supported in part by 31 million in audience impressions at radio (up 14 percent in the week ending Sept. 15, according to Nielsen Music). The tune also grows 12-8 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 — marking the first top 10 hit for both acts on that tally. The track climbs on each chart despite a slight 1 percent decline in weekly streams (to 17.3 million in the frame ending Sept. 22) and a 7 percent dip in digital sales (to 29,000).
A month ago, D.R.A.M. told Billboard that he was surprised by the success of “Broccoli.” “To be honest, I thought I was going to be well-received but strictly on the SoundCloud platform,” he said. “I had no idea that it was going to be a Billboard top 40 record. So yeah, I thought it was gonna be just lit for the culture, lit for SoundCloud, for the Internet. But it just really grew, to our surprise. So nobody’s mad over here.”
