Industry forecasters suggest their set, What a Time to Be Alive, could move upward of 450,000 to 500,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 24. Of that sum, more than 425,000 could be pure album sales.
Both figures would mark the second-biggest weekly totals for an album in 2015, trailing only Drake’s other surprise album: If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which launched with 535,000 units and 495,000 in album sales in the week ending Feb. 15, following its release on Feb. 12.
What a Time to Be Alive was released Sunday, Sept. 20, through Cash Money and Epic Records and distributed by Universal Music. The album — which is initially exclusively available through Apple Music and the iTunes Store — was only announced one day earlier, and its release came on an off-cycle Sunday (as most albums are now released on a Friday each week, the first day of the Billboard 200’s tracking week).
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Oct. 10-dated Billboard 200 chart, where Drake and Future will likely debut at No. 1, is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Sept. 27.
Drake and Future’s launch will probably block an also-arriving Lana Del Rey from the No. 1 slot, as her Honeymoon set could start in the No. 2 position with around 120,000 units.
