Demi Lovato Lands Second Pop Songs No. 1 With ‘Sorry Not Sorry’
Lovato leads for the first time since "Give Your Heart a Break" in 2012.
Demi Lovato leaps to her second No. 1 on Billboard‘s Pop Songs radio airplay chart, as “Sorry Not Sorry” jumps 5-1 on the latest tally, dated Nov. 4.
The Pop Songs chart, which began in 1992 (and just celebrated its 25th anniversary), measures total weekly plays, as tabulated by Nielsen Music, among its reporting panel of 164 mainstream top 40 stations.
Lovato previously led the list with “Give Your Heart a Break” on Sept. 15, 2012. Still, in between that hit and “Sorry,” she has scored six top 10s: “Heart Attack” (No. 4, 2013); “Neon Lights” (No. 7, 2014); “Really Don’t Care,” featuring Cher Lloyd (No. 7, 2014); “Cool for the Summer” (No. 3, 2015); “Confident” (No. 9, 2016); and her other current hit, Cheat Codes’ “No Promises,” on which she’s featured (No. 7, Sept. 30; this week, it dips 8-10).
“Sorry” soars to No. 1 on Pop Songs with the greatest positional leap to the top in nearly three years; Tove Lo‘s “Habits (Stay High)” surged 5-1 on the Nov. 15, 2014, chart. “Sorry” also claims the chart’s greatest gain in plays, hiking by 19 percent.
Meanwhile, last week’s new Pop Songs No. 1, Taylor Swift‘s “Look What You Made Me Do,” tumbles to No. 7, marking the steepest fall from the summit in the chart’s history. It surpasses the 1-6 plunge of Shaggy’s “Angel,” featuring Rayvon (May 5, 2001).
Still, Republic Records celebrates three Pop Songs leaders in-a-row, as, prior to “Sorry” and “Look,” Liam Payne’s “Strip That Down,” featuring Quavo, ruled for two weeks. Only one label previously three-peated at No. 1: Interscope, with Imagine Dragons’ “Demons”; Eminem’s “The Monster,” featuring Rihanna; and OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars” in 2013-14.
On the all-genre airplay, streaming and sales-based Billboard Hot 100, “Sorry” reached No. 8 (on the Oct. 21-dated chart), marking her highest career rank. The song is the lead single from her new album, Tell Me You Love Me, which launched at No. 3 on the Oct. 28-dated Billboard 200 after the singer released the LP on Sept. 29.
