David Bowie Dominates Australia’s Charts, Scores No. 1 with ‘Blackstar’
The late, great David Bowie sets a new record for the most albums on the ARIA Top 100.
David Bowie’s legend lives large on Australia’s sales chart this week with the late British artist landing a record 17 albums in the top 100, led by the bestseller, Blackstar (Columbia/Sony).
Blackstar bows at the summit to give Bowie his first “official” No. 1 album in Australia, though the singer’s 1980 album Scary Monsters and 1983’s Let’s Dance were recognized as No. 1s prior to the inception of the ARIA Charts in July 1983.
Blackstar, which was released Jan. 8, just two days before he died following a battle with cancer, also gave Bowie his first No. 1 in the U.S. and its his 10th chart-topper in his homeland.

The London-born singer, who released Blackstar on his 69th birthday, now holds the ARIA Charts record for most albums in the top 100 by a single artist (17), bettering the previous record held by Michael Jackson (14).
The Thin White Duke has three albums in the top 10 (The Best Of David Bowie is at No. 3 and Best Of Bowie is at No. 9) and 13 in this week’s top 50, the latter result equaling the ARIA Charts record for most albums in that frame by a single artist, which he shares with Jackson, who achieved the feat following his death in July 2009.
Bowie’s 25th studio album finally knocks Adele’s 25 (XL/Inertia) from the summit after seven weeks. 25 is now eight-times platinum certified. The top five is rounded out by Justin Bieber’s double-platinum Purpose (Def Jam/Universal) which slips 2-4 and Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s If I Can Dream, which holds at No. 5 (RCA/Sony Music).

On the ARIA Singles Chart, eight Bowie tracks have re-entered the top 100, including three top 50 hits: “Space Oddity” (No. 31), “Heroes” (No. 36) and his collaboration with Queen, “Under Pressure” (No. 42). Bowie’s songs “Starman” (No. 54), “Let’s Dance” (No. 63), “Changes” (No. 80) and “Life On Mars?” (No. 83) also return to the singles chart.
The latest ARIA singles chart is led by Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” which is at No. 1 for a sixth week. Jonas Blue feat. Dakota’s “Fast Car” (Virgin/EMI) rises 4-2, Snakehips feat. Tinashe & Chance The Rapper’s “All My Friends” (Sony Music) improves 6-3, Bieber’s “Sorry” slips 4-3 and Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches” (Def Jam) stays at No. 5.
