Danger Mouse Signs Sony Publishing Deal, Including Hits ‘Feel Good, Inc.’ and ‘Crazy’

The agreement encompasses both his back songwriting catalog and future creations.

Sony Music Publishing U.K. has inked a new publishing deal with hitmaker Brian Burton, a.k.a. Danger Mouse, one-half of the duos Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells. Best known for penning and producing songs like “Feel Good, Inc.” by Gorillaz and “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse’s new agreement encompasses both his back songwriting catalog and future creations.

Never confined to a single genre, Danger Mouse has been a true tastemaker in 21st-century R&B, indie rock, rap, adult contemporary and more, and his catalog also boasts writing and/or production credits for artists like The Black Keys, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, A$AP Rocky, Norah Jones, Adele and more. For his talents, he’s received six Grammys, 22 Grammy nominations, one Golden Globe for “Ordinary Love” — an original song by U2 for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom — and two Golden Globe nominations.

Though much of his focus has been on producing and writing for others in recent years, Danger Mouse has also kept busy creating music for his own artist projects. This includes the recent revival of Broken Bells, his collaborative duo with The ShinsJames Mercer, and the upcoming album Cheat Codes, a collaboration with The RootsBlack Thought, which features the late MF Doom, A$AP Rocky, Run the Jewels, Michael Kiwanuka, Joey Bada$$ and Russ. The record is set to be released on August 12.

Prior to his deal with SMP, Danger Mouse was signed to an administrative publishing agreement with Kobalt beginning in 2016. Danger Mouse, Broken Bells and Gnarls Barkley are all managed by Waxploitation, a multi-hyphenate record label and management company founded by Jeff Antebi.

“Danger Mouse is not only a brilliant songwriter, but a true innovator who pushes creative boundaries and challenges listeners to think outside the box,” says Jon Platt, Sony Music Publishing chairman & CEO in a statement. “We look forward to working alongside Brian and his team in this new phase of his career.”

David Ventura, Sony Music Publishing president & co-managing director, U.K. and senior vp international, adds, “Brian is a living legend, and one of the most pioneering songwriters and producers of this century. It is a real honor for all of us at SMP to have this unique chance to be working with him and Jeff his manager. We are not only thrilled to be representing some of his most prestigious songs, many of which recognized by the Grammys, but we are also opening a new relationship towards the future. From his own projects to artists collaborations or even soundtracks, the opportunities with a genius like Danger Mouse are limitless, and it is with the biggest smile I say that this is a dream come true!”

“We are beyond delighted to be working with Danger Mouse,” adds Alex Sheridan, catalogue, U.K, Sony Music Publishing. “Through his artist projects, production and songwriting he has proven himself as one of the great collaborators of our time. By working across his esteemed catalogue – and looking forward to what will be a tremendously exciting period of his career – we want to help him build upon the legendary status he has earned so far. I’d like to thank Brian and his team for putting their trust in Sony Music Publishing.”
