Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys Unlocks Solo No. 1 With ‘Shine on Me’

The lead single from The Black Keys' vocalist's new solo record follows three No. 1s by the duo on the Adult Alternative Songs chart.

Dan Auerbach had already earned three No. 1s on Billboard‘s Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart as one half of The Black Keys. Now, he’s added a solo chart-topper to his hit-filled history.

“Shine on Me,” the lead single from second solo studio album Waiting on a Song, jumps 2-1 on Adult Alternative Songs (on the list dated July 8), marking the singer-songwriter’s first solo No. 1, in his first appearance on his own.

Previously, Auerbach led with three songs by The Black Keys: “Lonely Boy” (seven weeks, 2011-12), “Fever” (10, 2014)  and “Gotta Get Away” (two, 2014).

“Shine” also reaches a new peak in all-rock-format radio airplay, bulleting at No. 35 on the Rock Airplay chart and rising to 2 million audience impressions in the week ending June 25, according to Nielsen Music.

“Shine” brightens playlists as The Keys are in the midst of a bit of a dormant period; since their last studio album, 2014’s Turn Blue (a No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated May 31, 2014, with 164,000 first-week copies sold), Auerbach has recorded solo and with side project The Arcs. He’s also produced albums by Cage the Elephant and The Pretenders.

Meanwhile, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney has produced records since the pair’s last project, including Michelle Branch’s latest album, Hopeless Romantic.

Auerbach’s Waiting on a Song bowed at Nos. 5 and 8, respectively, on the Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts (dated June 24) with 14,000 equivalent album units (13,000 in traditional sales).
