If it wasn't obvious already, nostalgia for the 1990s has seemingly taken over across the country, and brands are lining up to be a part of the action. On Aug. 9, Pepsi is throwing its hat into the ring with a "Summer of '92" event at Terminal 5 in New York City headlined by Biz Markie, Salt-N-Pepa, Lisa Loeb and En Vogue to celebrate the re-launch of the short-lived but beloved Crystal Pepsi brand, which will be available in stores in the U.S. for the first time in 23 years beginning Aug. 8.
Crystal Pepsi, the bizarrely clear cola that the brand initially put on the market back in 1992 (and which was promoted by a strange-yet-memorable Super Bowl commercial featuring Van Halen's "Right Now") and lasted just a year, was brought back late last year for a sweepstakes campaign due to popular demand from fans on social media, and is now being brought back to stores. Accordingly, Pepsi is hopping on the nostalgia train for an event that evokes not just the soda of summer '92, but the music, hairstyles, games and even smells of the period.
"We're not just trying to bring the product back, we're trying to bring the 90s experience back," says Linda Lagos, marketing director at Pepsi. "It felt like the stars were aligned with Pepsi with this one. We happen to have a very authentic connection to the 90s with this quirky, iconic brand."
In addition to sets from Markie, Salt-N-Pepa, Loeb and En Vogue, the event will also feature a "‘90s cut & style salon," an arcade with video games from the time period, a "recess" section with tetherball and four-square and a "smells like '90s scent station," the details of which the Pepsi team is keeping close to the chest. Presumably: scratch-offs.
