Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is the latest high-profile athlete to retain the services of Jay Z‘s Roc Nation Sports. The agency confirmed the signing over the weekend, and Bryant told ESPN on Sunday that he’s looking to Roc Nation to build-up his personal brand to “icon” status.
“I feel like it fits me,” Bryant said of Roc Nation. “It fits what I’m trying to do, what I’m trying to accomplish in life. I want to be the best that I can possibly be. It ain’t about a contract. It’s about me branding myself and being an icon for these kids. I love kids and they look up to me.”
Bryant, whose main sponsor is the Nike Jordan brand, said he relates to Jay Z’s rags-to-riches story.”He was one of those guys who come from nothing, and look at him now,” he said. “He’s a success, and all he wants to do is help.”
Bryant recently parted ways with agent Eugene Parker. The Pro-Bowler’s rookie contract, a five-year, $11.8 million deal, expires at the end of the current season. According to ESPN, Bryant is hoping to secure a long-term deal at $13 million per year.
Kim Miale at Roc Nation will be handling Bryant’s affairs, the company told Billboard.
Roc Nation Sports’ roster also includes NFL players Victor Cruz, Geno Smith and Ndamukong Suh, as well as MLB stars Yoenis Cespedes, C.C. Sabathia and Robinson Cano, and NBA superstar Kevin Durant.
