Welcome back to the Coming Around Again podcast, part of the Pop Shop family, where host Andrew Unterberger and a variety of guests will be discussing notable anniversaries being celebrated in the music world.
This week, Andrew welcomes Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, co-hosts of Billboard‘s Chart Beat podcast, to talk about Michael Jackson‘s Diamond-certified 1987 LP Bad. Though not Jackson’s most famous work, it holds a prestigious spot in Billboard history, having spun off a then-record five No. 1s on the Hot 100 chart — a mark tied only once to date, nearly a quarter-century later, by Katy Perry’s 2010 album Teenage Dream.
Trevor and Gary stop by to discuss the circumstances that led to MJ’s third straight blockbuster album being the one to capture the record, and also run down the five Hot 100-topping singles — “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror” and “Dirty Diana” — to debate which have held up the best, and which now show their years a little bit. And of course, we end with the ultimate question: Will we ever see another album notch five Hot 100 No. 1s again?
Listen below, and be sure to check back every week to see which classic artists, albums and songs are Coming Around Again.
