Coldplay’s ‘Adventure’ Debuts on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks

Coldplay returns with a No. 11 debut. Plus, Sam Smith and Sia double up on the survey.

Coldplay’s surprise new single, “Adventure of a Lifetime,” sets sail at No. 11 on the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart dated Nov. 21, the band’s highest entry among five charted songs. The No. 11 arrival bests the No. 18 entry of “A Sky Full of Stars” the week of June 14, 2014.

Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks is a weekly ranking of the most shared and/or mentioned songs on Twitter in the U.S., ranked by the volume of shares over a seven-day period (Monday to Sunday).

“Lifetime” previews the British band’s upcoming album, A Head Full of Dreams, due Dec. 4. Coldplay’s new music announcement sparked 63,000 Twitter mentions and 55,000 Twitter reactions for the week ending Nov. 8, according to Next Big Sound, gains of 738 and 7,300 percent, respectively. Strides in social activity trigger the group’s No. 40 re-entry on the Social 50 chart.

Meanwhile, Sam Smith posts a pair of debuts, led by “Drowning Shadows” at No. 19. The song headlines Smith’s deluxe reissue of his 2014 debut album, In the Lonely Hour, released Nov. 6. The new collection includes nine new tracks, including covers of Amy Winehouse’s “Love Is a Losing Game” and Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know,” a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.

In addition, Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall,” the theme song to the James Bond film Spectre, enters at No. 35, fueled by the global release of its parent film on Nov. 6. The two tracks help spur 54,000 Twitter mentions for Smith in the tracking week, up 102 percent. The bump lifts the Brit 28-20 on the Social 50 survey, his highest rank since a No. 19 showing on the chart dated June 6.

Sia follows Smith’s lead with two entries of her own. “Alive,” which the pop star penned with Adele and Tobias Jesso Jr., re-enters at No. 25 after its music video release on Nov. 5. The clip continues Sia’s recent custom of not appearing in her own videos: This time, a young martial artist practices her moves while sporting the Australian singer’s half-black, half-blond hairstyle.

Meanwhile, “Bird Set Free” starts at No. 28 following its official audio release on Nov. 3. Sia performed both “Alive” and “Free” during her stint as the musical guest on the Nov. 7 episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Donald Trump. The two cuts preview her forthcoming studio album, This Is Acting, due out Jan. 29.
