The 2019 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards produced a flurry of sales for the performers and winners on the Nov. 13 broadcast on ABC, according to reports from Nielsen Music.
Combined, the performed tracks and top winners earned 117,000 track downloads in the U.S. in the Nov. 13-15 window, up 592% compared with the 17,000 sales from Nov. 10-12, the three days directly preceding the event.
In terms of pure sales, the big winner from Nashville’s biggest night was P!nk’s “Love Me Anyway,” featuring Chris Stapleton. Following the duo’s performance of the song, “Love” raced to 21,000 sold from Nov. 13-15, up 4,892% compared with a negligible figure in the days leading to the ceremony.
The genre’s hottest star of the moment, Luke Combs, also had a strong night all around. The singer-songwriter’s performance of “Beer Never Broke My Heart” sparked a 1,915% sales spike to 5,000 copies (up from a negligible figure). His single “Beautiful Crazy” also took home the song of the year prize, prompting a 433% jump to 5,000 sold as well (from 1,000), while Combs himself nabbed male vocalist of the year.
Combs’ wins and performance lined up with the arrival of his second album, What You See Is What You Get. The set, released Nov. 8, debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums charts, setting a new single-week streaming record for a country album.
Other big gainers from the CMAs include Old Dominion’s “One Man Band” (12,000 sold, up 266% from 3,000 sold in the three days leading up to the show), Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country” (8,000 sold, up 603% from 1,000), Dan + Shay’s “Speechless” (7,000 sold, up 811% from TK), Thomas Rhett’s “Remember You Young” (5,000 sold, up 282% from 1,000) and Lady Antebellum’s “What If I Never Get Over You” (8,000 sold, up 543% from 1,000). Lady Antebellum performed “You” alongside guest star Halsey in a medley with her single “Graveyard.” The mix paid dividends for Halsey’s non-country track: “Graveyard” shot to 7,000 in sales, up 370% from 2,000.
Rhett and Lady Antebellum’s gains for their singles lead to breakthrough boosts on the Hot Country Songs chart, which combines track downloads, radio airplay and streams. Rhett’s “Young” pushes 11-6 there, while Lady A’s “You” flies 17-7; both acts claim a 14th top 10 hit on the chart.
In addition to sales, the CMAs also prompted bumps in on-demand audio streams, which rose 11.2% for the same set of songs on Nov. 13-14, compared with Nov. 11-12. Old Dominion’s “One Man Band” led the pack with 2.2 million on-demand audio streams in the two-day window.
