The pop vet, who first reached a Billboard chart in 1998 and has scored 30 Billboard Hot 100 hits (including five No. 1s), lands her first title on Hot Country Songs, as “Shotgun” debuts (with a bullet, pun intended) at No. 28, marking the week’s highest new entry. The song accompanied the April 22 episode of ABC’s Nashville (a week after Aguilera’s more pop-focused song “The Real Thing” was featured on the show). Aguilera first previewed “Shotgun” by singing it on the Academy of Country Music Awards, which aired on CBS (April 19).

Ballad “Shotgun” bows at No. 7 on Country Digital Songs with 30,000 sold, according to Nielsen Music. Notably, the song was available commercially only for a week, per an agreement among all involved, unlike other Nashville singles, which remain available for purchase.
Aguilera unveiled her character Jade St. John on the April 15 Nashville episode, guesting as the ex-fiancee of Jeff Fordham, played by Oliver Hudson.
While “Shotgun” blasts Aguilera onto Hot Country Songs for the first time, it’s not her first foray into the genre. “Just a Fool,” her country-flavored duet with Blake Shelton, her co-judge on NBC’s The Voice, didn’t reach any country charts, but did climb to No. 21 on Adult Contemporary, No. 28 on Adult Pop Songs and No. 25 on Digital Songs in 2012-13. It’s sold 802,000 downloads to date.

Aguilera’s new chart hit doesn’t necessarily signal an all-out switch from pop to country. As she told Billboard earlier this year, she’s working on her next album with fellow Voice judge and pop/R&B hitmaker Pharrell Williams. “I just have to make sure it’s right and it’s genuine and it’s heartfelt,” she said. “I’m very excited to pour my heart out into this record fully.”
