Pop Songs
*** No. 1 (2 weeks)*** “Habits (Stay High)” Tove Lo
Tove Lo vaults 5-1 on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart with her debut hit, “Habits (Stay High).” The coronation marks the seventh No. 1 in 2014 by an act in a first appearance on the chart (as a lead), following Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap,” Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” Magic’s “Rude,” Nico & Vinz’s “Am I Wrong” and Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” The bounty of rookie rulers is the greatest since 1997, when eight newcomers led on their first tries: the Cardigans (“Lovefool”), Savage Garden (“I Want You”), Hanson (“MMMBop”), Meredith Brooks (“Bitch”), OMC (“How Bizarre”), Third Eye Blind (“Semi-Charmed Life”), Sugar Ray (“Fly”) and Chumawamba (“Tubthumping”). Programmers have attributed the abundance of new acts’ dominance both to song quality and a lull in product from veterans (Billboard, Sept. 13).
