Sam Smith completes a swift ascent to the top of the Adult Contemporary chart, as “Stay With Me” lifts 2-1 in its 10th week. He completes the quickest climb to the top with a debut hit (as a lead act, and excluding holiday hits, which have their own sped-up timetable each November/December) since Bob Carlisle’s touching father-daughter ballad “Butterfly Kisses” soared to No. 1 in just its third week on May 24, 1997. “Stay With Me,” at No. 2 on the overall Billboard Hot 100, also holds at No. 2 on Adult Pop Songs; rises 3-2 on Pop Songs; and reaches the top 10 on Rhythmic Songs (12-9) and Adult R&B Songs (12-9).

Melbourne, Australia native Vance Joy (real name: James Keogh) tops both Rock Airplay and Alternative Songs (ascending 2-1 on each chart) with his breakthrough hit “Riptide.” “It’s pretty crazy,” he told Billboard (in the Aug. 16 issue) of the song’s rise. “It has been like this steady wave of people listening to it. In Australia, it happened last year, and it has kind of been slowly chipping away here in the States. It’s hard to crack America. I was always thinking we would spend a couple years pushing it, but when it finally starts to make an impression, it’s nice.”
