Chart Beat Podcast: Ranking the 14-Week Hot 100 No. 1s, From Boyz II Men & Black Eyed Peas to Bruno & Bieber

"Despacito" joins seven other songs that led for 14 weeks, the second-longest command in the chart's history. Plus, former "American Top 40" staffer Sandy Stert Benjamin stops by to remember…

Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what’s on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week, Gary and Trevor count down the eight songs – now including Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber – that have led the Billboard Hot 100 for exactly 14 weeks, from smashes by Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Elton John and more. Plus, the latest math broken down on whether “Despacito” seems likely to earn a 15th week atop the Hot 100 next week.

Meanwhile, on the 40th anniversary of the passing of Elvis Presley, Sandy Stert Benjamin joins the podcast to recall the week that the King of Rock and Roll passed, causing Casey Kasem and staff to start over writing and recording that week’s episode of renowned radio countdown American Top 40. (Sandy held various roles on the show, including being the staff’s first recipient of ranks from Billboard each week, as the AT40 chart then mirrored the Hot 100’s top 40, and being the lone lucky person in the studio with Kasem as he counted down the hits.)

“We just kind of went into adrenaline-overdrive, really, to put together a tribute that we were hoping would be fitting, and say it right,” Sandy recalls of celebrating Presley that week. “I do think we pulled it off. Casey delivered it sensitively. He could be relied on to deliver anything. I think it was a very heartfelt tribute, ultimately.”
