Three years after taking the job overseeing Republic Records’ marketing and promotion departments and artist development initiatives, executive vice president Charlie Walk has been named president of the Republic Group, a new formation under the Universal Music Group umbrella.
Walk’s new role will see him sussing out beneficial partnerships for Republic and its sister labels, as well as remaining in charge of marketing and promotion, including Island Records and “pop initiatives” at Scott Borchetta’s stalwart Big Machine Label Group. Walk will continue to be based in New York and report to Monte Lipman.
“Charlie will now have even more latitude to help steer Republic into uncharted waters with this new position,” Republic CEO Monte Lipman says in a statement issued this morning. “The formation of the Republic Group reflects our bullish outlook for the future of this business and all the opportunities that exist.”
Last year, Republic ended the year with nearly one out of every three of 2015 Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart’s top 10 songs, including hits from The Weeknd and Nick Jonas. Walk was named No. 91 on the 2015 Billboard Power 100.
