Chainsmokers Score Record-Breaking No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart

The duo takes over as the act with the most No. 1s since the chart launched in 2013. Plus, Kungs vs. Cookin' on 3 Burners heat up with "This Girl."

The Chainsmokers notch their record-breaking fourth No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated Sept. 3) as “Closer,” featuring Halsey (who earns her first leader), jumps 3-1. As previously reported, the song concurrently tops the Billboard Hot 100, where it’s each act’s first No. 1.

Notably, “Closer” is just the second track to have topped both Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and the Hot 100; Baauer‘s “Harlem Shake” ruled the charts for eight and five weeks, respectively, beginning March 2, 2013.

“Closer” pushes the DJ duo of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall ahead of Calvin Harris for the most leaders dating to the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart’s Jan. 26, 2013, inception. In 2016, The Chainsmokers have captured three No. 1s: “Roses,” featuring Rozes (14 weeks), “Don’t Let Me Down,” featuring Daya (12), and now “Closer”; that’s 27 of the year’s 36 weeks thus far (75 percent). The pair first led for two weeks in 2014 with “#Selfie.”

The Chainsmokers & Halsey’s ‘Closer’ Climbs to No. 1 on Hot 100

“Closer” culls the triumvirate of top Airplay, Digital and Streaming Gainer awards on the Hot 100 and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, with 116,000 downloads sold (up 44 percent) in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music, marking The Chainsmokers’ best sales week for a song; 23.1 million U.S. streams (up 24 percent); and 49 million in airplay audience (up 41 percent). The collab rebounds for a second week atop Dance/Electronic Digital Songs and leads Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs for the first time.

‘THIS’ IS BIG: French DJ Kungs and Australian act Cookin’ on 3 Burners earn their first top 10 each on Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs with “This Girl” (16-8; 4.5 million domestic streams, up 42 percent). “Girl” has already achieved top 10 status on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs (hitting a No. 7 high), Dance/Electronic Digital Songs (No. 6 peak) and Dance/Mix Show Airplay (No. 10 peak). On the Hot 100, it nears the top 40 with a 65-42 surge.

’13’ = 4: Borgeous (real name John Borger) barges in at No. 4 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums, with 13 (1,000 sold). More 13-related news: Although 13 is his first album, the producer is well-known for his first hit track, the DVBBS collab “Tsunami,” which reached, you guessed it, No. 13 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay … in 2013.
