Camila Cabello Reflects on Hitting U.K No. 1 With ‘Havana’: ‘My Mom Screamed’
The Cabello family was on cloud nine when "Havana" hit the top.
Sleepless nights and loads of screaming. It sounds like the stuff of nightmares, but that was the state of play in the Cabello household as the family’s own pop star Camila finally iced a major milestone.
The 20-year-old singer’s hit “Havana” (Epic/Syco) featuring Young Thug last Friday (Nov. 3) reached No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart after 13 weeks, including a frustrating three-week stretch glued to second place. It’s her first No. 1 solo hit in the U.K., eclipsing her previous best of No. 2 with 2016’s “Work From Home” when she was a member of Fifth Harmony.
Cabello was enjoying a rare day off with her folks when the good news came through. “We all went crazy,” she told the Official Charts Company. “You have to celebrate things like this because you never know if it’s going to happen again. My mom screamed. My dad doesn’t scream, but there were hugs – and maybe a small scream from him in a masculine, fatherly way.”
Cabello caught up with reps from the charts compiler from the sidelines of the Music Industry Trusts Award on Monday night in central London, where she performed the single and the new song “Never Be the Same.” She also earned a trophy for her chart feat (see below).
On the Billboard Hot 100, “Havana” zooms 7-2 for a new peak, and sits just behind Post Malone’s “Rockstar,” featuring 21 Savage, which collects a fourth week on top. If “Havana” climbs to the U.S. summit, expect a lot of hollering and hugs in the Cabello household.
