BTS, EXO & NCT Become First K-Pop Acts to Sweep Social 50 Chart’s Top Three

Additionally, GOT7 rises to No. 5, giving the chart four K-pop acts in its top five.

For the first time in the history of Billboard’s Social 50 chart (which began in 2012), the entire top three is occupied by K-pop acts, with BTS, EXO and NCT taking Nos. 1-3, respectively, on the April 7-dated list.

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended March 29.

The latest Social 50 also features the first top five that has K-pop acts in four of the five positions, with GOT7 taking the No. 5 position (Shawn Mendes breaks the K-pop streak at No. 4).


BTS rules the ranking for a 68th nonconsecutive week, owed partly to a boost of 22 percent in Twitter mentions, racking up 7 million overall, according to Next Big Sound. The group celebrated a win at the Kids’ Choice Awards for favorite global music star on March 24 (though BTS was not in attendance), including crafting a response to ceremony host John Cena, who congratulated the singers on Twitter for their win.

Meanwhile, EXO spends a 10th straight week at No. 2, gaining 96 percent in all social media reactions, including 127 percent in Instagram reactions (3.7 million in all). EXO had a celebration of its own, marking the 28th birthday of member Xiumin on March 26. The group also began teasing the release of subset group EXO-CBX’s comeback song “Blooming Day,” which is set for an April 10 release.

Finally, NCT, who debuted on the previous week’s Social 50 chart dated March 31 at No. 9, reaches a new peak of No. 3. The group posted an abundance of photos of its members onto its Instagram account – no small feat given NCT’s 18-person membership – as it basked in the glow of the March 14 release of full-length album NCT 2018 Empathy, which debuted at No. 5 on the World Albums chart dated March 24 (1,000 copies sold in the week ending March 15), according to Nielsen Music). In all, NCT garnered 9.8 million Instagram reactions, 5.5 million more than the previous tracking week.
