Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what's on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.
This week, KJYO (KJ103) Oklahoma City program director JJ Ryan return to discuss BTS' new single, "Boy With Luv," as the track, featuring Halsey, debuts at No. 35 on Billboard's Pop Songs chart, marking the highest start of the K-pop kings' four entries on the survey so far.
"It's going to be a monumental song for K-pop," Ryan says, with KJYO having played "Boy" 60 times through April 17, according to Nielsen Music (trailing only KYLD San Francisco, with 80 plays, and KROI Houston, with 73). "It's clearly got radio excited."
Plus, says Ryan, "There's a lot more K-pop being worked by U.S. labels than there was a couple years ago. BTS paved the way, and got everyone going, 'What is K-pop?' And, their fan army started educating radio on what it was."
Plus, senior editor Andrew Unterberger joins in to discuss Lil Nas X's second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and newly-featured artist Billy Ray Cyrus' perhaps surprising career evolution since arriving with "Achy Breaky Heart" in 1992.
