Nile Rodgers, Ellie Goulding Honored at BMI London Awards

Legendary lyricist Tim Rice was honored, Nile Rodgers took top prize and Ellie Goulding was a three-time winner at the BMI London Awards, held Monday night at London’s Dorchester Hotel. The annual gala is held to honor the U.K./Euro/Caribbean songwriters, producers and publishers of the biggest songs on U.S. radio and television.

Rice, whose credits include Jesus Christ Superstar and The Lion King, was presented the BMI Icon award for his “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” BMI also presented Nile Rodgers with the Robert S. Musel Award (song of the year) for “Get Lucky,” co-written with Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams. The track beat out hits by Ed Sheeran and Goulding, who nevertheless earned a trio of awards in the pop category. Other winners included Avicii, who nabbed the dance award for “Wake Me Up,” and Sacha Skarbeck for co-writing Miley Cyrus‘ “Wrecking Ball.”

The always-interesting Million-Air Awards category, honoring a song’s combined radio plays in the U.S., included Sting‘s “Every Breath You Take” (12 million), Van Morrison‘s “Brown Eyed Girl” (11 million), Eric Clapton‘s “Layla” (9 million), Free‘s “All Right Now” (5 million), and Eagle-Eye Cherry‘s “Save Tonight” (4 million).

Attendees included Rice, Rodgers, Morrison, Ray Davies, Cherry, Don Black, Snow Patrol‘s Johnny Quinn and BMI president Mike O’Neill.
