Blake Shelton Serves Up Latest Hit on Hot Country Songs Chart

Cheers to "Sangria," which vaults into the top 10. Plus, moves for Zac Brown Band, Tyler Farr and A Thousand Horses.

Blake Shelton stirs up his latest hit on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart (dated May 16), as “Sangria” soars 11-4.

The third single from Bringing Back the Sunshine (following the No. 3-peaking “Neon Light” and No. 2 “Lonely Tonight,” featuring Ashley Monroe), and his 23rd career top 10, bumps 3-2 on Country Digital Songs with a 50 percent gain to 58,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen Music. The song, also up 17-15 on Country Airplay (20 million in audience, up 16 percent), vaults after Shelton sang it on the April 27 episode of NBC’s The Voice (a performance piggybacked onto his coach’s role).

Shelton previously performed “Sangria” on the April 19 Academy of Country Music Awards, broadcast on CBS, and which he co-hosted with Luke Bryan.

Zac Brown Band Dethrones Taylor Swift Atop Billboard Artist 100

BROWN, FARR DEBUT: As previously reported, two country albums log lofty debuts this week. Zac Brown Band collects its third No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as the group opens in the penthouse with Jekyll + Hyde. The set starts with 228,000 equivalent album units (of which 214,000 are pure album sales) in the week ending May 3. On Top Country Albums, it also arrives at No. 1, likewise marking the group’s third leader.

Meanwhile, Tyler Farr enters the Billboard 200 at No. 4 and Top Country Albums at No. 2 with Suffer in Peace (42,000 units, of which 36,000 are album sales). The album follows Farr’s 2013 full-length debut, Redneck Crazy, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 (starting with 29,000 in traditional sales) and No. 2 on Top Country Albums.

HORSE POWER: A Thousand Horses gallops into the top five on Country Airplay with its debut hit “Smoke” (7-5; 36 million, up 11 percent). The track rises 10-9 as the top Airplay Gainer on Hot Country Songs.

The band is the first act to send a debut Country Airplay entry into the top five this year and the first since Maddie & Tae took its introductory single “Girl in a Country Song” to No. 1 in December 2014 (after reaching the top five in November).

A Thousand Horses, which will open Darius Rucker‘s upcoming Southern Style Tour (with Brett Eldredge and Brothers Osborne), releases its debut album, Southernality, June 9. The quartet — Michael Hobby (lead vocals), Bill Satcher (lead guitar), Zach Brown (guitar, vocals) and Graham Deloach (bass, vocals) — recently told Billboard that its mix of country and rock is a product of its members’ musical upbringing. “I think everybody hears things differently and has their own opinion[s] about things, but growing up in the Southern rock realm with Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Marshall Tucker Band, as well as Tom Petty and the Black Crowes, I think that’s where a lot of our influences come from and that’s what people hear [in our music], so they relate it to that,” Hobby says.

“To me, that’s one of the biggest compliments you can give. I’m honored and humbled by that, because I’m a big fan of those artists, for sure.”
