In a week of four new entries in the top five of the U.K. album chart, British singer-songwriter Ben Howard came out on top with a No. 1 entry for his sophomore album I Forget Where We Were (Universal Island). Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” (Epic/Sony) leads the singles pack again, starting a fourth week at the summit.
Howard’s debut album Every Kingdom reached No. 4 in 2012, and the follow-up went straight to the top ahead of a No. 2 start for Slipknot’s 5 – The Gray Chapter (Roadrunner). Ed Sheeran’s X (Asylum/Warner Music) fell 2-3, with Neil Diamond’s Melody Road (Capitol/Universal) kicking off at No. 4 and fellow veterans Status Quo at No. 5 with their acoustic set Aquostic – Stripped Bare (Fourth Chord).
Sam Smith dipped 3-6 with the former chart-topper In The Lonely Hour (Capitol/Universal), while last week’s new entry at the peak, Ella Henderson’s Chapter One (Syco Music/Sony Music), fell to No. 7. There was a No. 17 start for Nicole Scherzinger’s Big Fat Lie (RCA/Sony), while ). Keep Calm and Chillout (Sony Music CG) started a sixth week at the top of the compilation chart.
Trainor’s single had over 1.4 million U.K. streams last week, according to the Official Charts Company, and its four-week reign puts its level for longest No. 1 singles run of 2014 with “Rather Be” (Atlantic/Warner Music) by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne.
Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” jumped 4-2 and there was a new entry at No. 3 for house duo Ware & Odyssey’s “Bump & Grind 2014” (RCA/Sony), their remix of the R. Kelly hit from 1994. London rapper Fuse ODG had the other top ten arrival of the week, starting at No. 9 with “Tina” (3 Beat/All Around The World), featuring R&B singer Angel.
