Beatport Expands Bass Offerings With Three New Genre Tags, Celebrates With Free Music From UZ
This first week only, get a free download of an exclusive UZ instrumental LP.

Who here is not addicted to that bass? It seems the whole dance world runs on the lower register, and who is Beatport to demand that all shades of the bass live under one umbrella? Future bass is not dubstep. Neither is trap, nor garage, and some stuff is too experimental to define.
Beatport has expanded its bass representation and adds three new genre tags. Joining the long-established dubstep category comes Trap/Future Bass, Garage/Bassline/Grime, and Leftfield Bass.
In that first category, expect to find all your favorite sounds that rock the mainstream bass world from the likes of UZ, Mr. Carmack, Bro Safari, plus labels including Quality Good Records, Mad Decent, Dim Mak, and OWSLA.
Garage/Bassline/Grime will represent all the best bass from the UK, including artists from DJ Q to Distinkt and Flava D, plus Butterz, 877 Records, and Crucast. Leftfield Bass represents the really exciting subgenres coming from the US, including the likes of Teklife, Deep Medi Musik, Hyperdub, and the music of artists from Ikonik, DJ Spinn, and Addison Groove.
If you feel like Beatport should have done this years ago, well, so do they.
“We 100-percent recognize that we are really late to the game introducing these genres, but we have been working hard with key labels, artists and press from the bass community to build the best possible experience for DJs,” Beatport General Manager Terry Weerasinghe is quoted in a press release. “We can’t make up for not having huge genres like Trap properly curated on the store five years ago.
However, we have now assembled a team dedicated to our bass genres, which means we can promote more bass artists and labels by giving them features like an international sales chart, profiled DJ Top 10s and regular artist and label spotlights, plus targeted social support and cross-promotion to our other key genres and global fan bases. We’ll also hand curate the best tracks every week, making Beatport the only store to give promotional merchandising slots to these genres week in, week out.”
Dubstep ain’t going nowhere, of course. It will continue to focus with a laser sharpness on the work of monster bass beasts Zomboy, Datsik, FuntCase, Flux Pavilion, and more, with new music from labels including Never Say Die Records, Disciple, Circus, and Firepower.
To mark the occasion, Beatport will give away a track from trap-lord UZ each week, and if you collect them all, you’ll have a full exclusive instrumental LP. You can only nab it for free via Beatport, so don’t sleep.
