This week, as Ariana Grande‘s “7 Rings” spends, fittingly, a seventh week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, matching her best reign, Gary and Trevor recap how women in 2019 have already tied their total time spent atop the chart (in lead roles) in all of 2018. Can women’s Hot 100 domination last, or will men stage a comeback over the rest of the year? Notably, Lil Nas X could be a contender for the latter with his breakout hit “Old Town Road,” which this week gallops into the Hot 100’s top 40.
Plus, in a very meta chat, iHeartRadio chief product officer Chris Williams discusses the evolution of podcasts and how they continue to intertwine with traditional radio, as the company recently announced that its Allentown, Pennsylvania station WSAN has flipped to an all-podcast format.
“I think the expectation is different,” Williams says of terrestrial radio vs. podcasts. “In a broadcast medium, [there’s] the need to change topics fairly regularly so that you’re re-engaging your audience; in a music format, every three-and-a-half minutes there’s a different song.” As for podcasts, however, Williams says, “I’m signing up for a 30-to-45-minute conversation. I’m giving the storyteller permission to take their time and tell me a story in a long-form, elaborate way.”
