Amazon Releases Chart for How You Finish This Sentence: ‘Alexa, Play the Song That Goes Like…”

Amazon has harnessed a common life hack for the slightly forgetful, and AI-using, music fan in all of us and turned it into a new chart.

Amazon has harnessed a common life hack for the slightly forgetful, and AI-using, music fan in all of us and turned it into a new chart. On Tuesday, the tech-and-commerce giant released the Top 50 Alexa Lyrics list, revealing the most popular lyric requests to its voice assistant Alexa.

We’ve all done it. You want to hear a song, but don’t necessarily recall its title, so your brain instead serves up the most recognizable lyrics in the track. Asking Alexa to play the song that goes like “I got sunshine in my pocket” or “I got this feeling inside my bones” will play Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” When you want to tell the world that you “like big butts and I cannot lie,” Alexa will serve up Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back.” And so on.

“The Top 50 Alexa lyrics chart now gives music lovers insight into what makes a memorable lyric, opening a window into an entirely new way for fans to search for music, and some of the results might surprise you,” a company rep said in announcing the chart.

The inaugural list is topped by the lyric “I can make your hands clap,” which serves up Fitz and the Tantrums’ “HandClap,” followed by “head out on the highway,” likely requested by people starting a road trip and wanting to hear Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild.” The top five is rounded out by the aforementioned “I got this feeling inside my bones,” “I came in like a wrecking ball,” for Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball,” and “true love won’t desert you,” for Journey’s “Separate Ways.”

Some entries, like “tell me what you want what you really really want” and “hello darkness my old friend,” show that for many people the most memorable lyrics in a song don’t have anything to do with the title or even a chorus. Other popular lyric requests actually contain the entire song name, such as “we all live in a yellow submarine” and “swish swish bish,” or a part of the chorus right before the song title is uttered, like “hey now, you’re a rock star.”

And a list of this nature wouldn’t be complete with requests to hear oft-mistaken “teenage wasteland,” aka The Who’s “Baba O’Reilly.”

The chart comes on the heels of two announcements that could result in even more lyric requests for Alexa: the company slashed the price of its new Echo speaker, and recently tweaked its Amazon Music mobile app to enable Alexa.
