AFI rules Billboard‘s Alternative Albums and Hard Rock Albums charts (dated Feb. 11) for the first time, as AFI (The Blood Album), the California band’s 10th studio LP, debuts as its first title to top each tally.
The set starts with 29,000 equivalent album units earned, with 28,000 in pure album sales, in the week ending Jan. 26, according to Nielsen Music. As previously reported, the consumption-based methodology instituted for the Billboard 200 in December 2014 now extends to many of Billboard‘s genre-specific album charts (as of the Feb. 11-dated lists). Previously, charts such as Top Rock Albums, Alternative Albums and Hard Rock Albums were solely sales-based; each now ranks equivalent album units, tallied via a combination of sales, streaming equivalent units and track equivalent units.
The sales total for AFI represents the quartet’s best week since 2009, when eighth effort Crash Love moved 52,000. Additionally, the new album arrives at No. 2 on Top Rock Albums, the band’s best standing since Decemberunderground debuted at No. 1 in June 2006.
The new release opens at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, representing the band’s best rank since it debuted at No. 1 with Decemberunderground.
