Alabama Shakes‘ “Sound & Color,” from the band’s former Billboard 200 No. 1 album of the same name, debuts on multiple Billboard rock charts (dated Dec. 5), thanks to an assist from a new Apple iPad Pro commercial that prominently features the song.
The track bows on Rock Digital Songs at No. 9 and Alternative Digital Songs at No. 10, marking the band’s first top 10s on either chart, with a 250 percent blast to 9,000 downloads sold in the week ending Nov. 19, according to Nielsen Music. It also enters the sales/streaming/airplay-based Hot Rock Songs chart at No. 17, becoming the Brittany Howard-led rockers’ best debut and third-best ranking on the chart, following “Don’t Wanna Fight” (No. 13) and “Hold On” (No. 15).
After the commercial’s early November debut, the song leapt from a nominal number sold in the tracking week ending Nov. 5 to 3,000 the following week (ending Nov. 12), before hitting its new sales high. Additionally, the song has jumped from 145,000 U.S. streams to 188,000 and (as reflected on this week’s charts) to 421,000 in that three-week period.
“Sound & Color” has not been released as a radio single from the band’s eponymous album, but follows “Fight,” “Gimme All Your Love” (No. 36), “Future People” (No. 37) and the single-only live version of “Joe” (from Austin City Limits) (No. 50) as entries from the set on Hot Rock Songs. The LP became Alabama Shakes’ first No. 1 on the May 9 Billboard 200 and has sold 792,000 to date.
