Aaliyah’s Self-Titled Album Returns to Top 10 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart

Her 2001 project returns to the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums' top 10 after its re-issue on Sept. 10, and is the genre's best-selling album of the week.

Aaliyah‘s 2001 self-titled album returns to the top 10 of Billboard‘s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for the first time since its original release year, while several of its songs have notable sales arrivals. It’s the second recent reissue from Aaliyah’s long out-of-print Blackground Records catalog, following One In a Million, which re-entered at No. 5 on the Sept. 4-dated chart.

Aaliyah re-enters Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums at No. 7 on the list dated Sept. 25. The set earned 26,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 16, according to MRC Data. Of that total, the majority – 15,000 units – are from traditional album sales, a sum that also makes it the top-selling R&B/hip-hop album of the week.


Streaming makes up the second-largest category, with 9,000 units from that sector, equal to 11.5 million on-demand plays of the album’s songs. The remaining 2,000 units derive from individual track downloads of the album’s songs. (One unit equals the following levels of consumption: one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams for a song on the album.)

The album rejoins the top 10 for the first time since the chart dated Nov. 10, 2001, when it ranked at No. 9. Aaliyah peaked at No. 2 for four nonconsecutive weeks that year – its first and second weeks on the chart (Aug. 4 and 11) and again on Sept. 15 and 22, with the latter pair owed to reaction after the singer’s death on Aug. 25 that year.

In the sales market, “Rock the Boat” is the album’s top performer. The former single sold 4,400 downloads in the week ending Sept. 16 and debuts at No. 4 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart. Four other titles included on Aaliyah also make the 25-position list: “More Than a Woman” (No. 10 with 2,800 sold), “Are You That Somebody?” (No. 14; 2,400), “We Need a Resolution,” featuring Timbaland (No. 16; 2,200) and “I Care 4 U” (No. 21; 2,000).

The lineup generally repeats, too, in the streaming count. “Boat” is Aaliyah‘s most-streamed title, with 2.2 million U.S. streams in the week. “Woman” follows with 1.45 million, with “Resolution” in third through 1.41 million clicks.

Aaliyah is the latest beneficiary in a series of re-issues from Blackground. The album’s return follows the late singer’s 1996 album, One in a Million, which made was reissued on Aug. 20 and the soundtrack to the film Romeo Must Die, which included the singer’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, “Try Again,” on Sept. 3. Two more Aaliyah releases are on the horizon, with the 2002 compilation I Care 4 U and the greatest hits LP Ultimate Aaliyah scheduled for Oct. 8. (The latter will see its first official U.S. release.)

Other long out-of-print Blackground titles have also recently been reintroduced to the market, or are due soon, including albums from Timbaland (Tim’s Bio: Life From Da Bassment, reissued Aug. 27), Timbaland & Magoo (Indecent Proposal, Under Construction II, Welcome to Our World; Aug. 27), Tank (Force of Nature, One Man and Sex Love & Pain; Sept. 17), JoJo (her 2004 self-titled album and The High Road; Sept. 24), Ashley Parker Angel (Soundtrack to Your Life, Sept. 24) and Toni Braxton (Libra, Oct. 1).
